Please note that, because of the high safety standards in railway operations, for some skills you must apply for employment first before you can receive training.

How do I get training to become a Train Driver?

You need to apply to be a train driver with a train operating company - see www.rail.co.uk if you do not know your local one. Training for train drivers is NOT something that ARTP members offer. You cannot train as an individual without getting employment first.


How do I get training to work on the track?(PTS Course / Personal Track Safety)

You first need to be employed by an approved contractor to receive track safety training. See www.riagb.org.uk/jobs.htm for some possible contacts and for agencies. Companies seeking PTS training for their employees can use the Training Directory (left).

How do I start a career on the railways?

For engineering jobs, you could try Network Rail or companies in the railway supply industry. For operations and station jobs, you should approach a train operator.

Network Rail and some of the larger companies operate graduate training schemes and apprenticeships.
